Mumbai, (Economy India): Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar has called for an immediate review of the Centre’s ethanol-blended petrol policy, urging the government to suspend the use of E20 petrol until vehicle technology is fully compatible with the fuel.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Sunday, Ambedkar said his party opposes ethanol-blended petrol and expressed concerns over its impact on vehicles. He claimed that the use of E20 fuel has led to engine-related issues, including engine seizure, which he alleged is becoming a contributing factor in road accidents.
“We oppose ethanol-blended petrol. The government should reconsider its decision. Until the necessary technology is available, its use should be banned,” Ambedkar said.
The Centre has been promoting ethanol-blended fuel as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions, and support the country’s sugarcane and biofuel industries. Under this initiative, petrol containing up to 20 percent ethanol (E20) has been introduced in several parts of the country.
However, concerns have been raised by some vehicle owners and industry observers regarding the compatibility of older vehicles with higher ethanol blends. Experts generally recommend that only vehicles designed or certified for E20 fuel should regularly use it, while manufacturers continue to develop engines capable of handling higher ethanol concentrations efficiently.
Ambedkar urged the government to conduct a comprehensive review of the policy and ensure that the required technological infrastructure and vehicle compatibility are in place before expanding the use of E20 petrol nationwide.
The debate over ethanol blending continues as India balances its clean energy goals with concerns related to vehicle performance, consumer awareness, and infrastructure readiness.
