Evian, France (Economy India): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on Tuesday, discussing ways to further strengthen the India-UK relationship across sectors including trade, technology, innovation, defence and clean energy.

The two leaders also exchanged views on key regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Describing the meeting as “excellent”, Prime Minister Modi said the past year had been particularly significant for India-UK ties.

“Trade agreements have opened several new avenues for economic cooperation. Our discussions today focused on how to further accelerate India-UK relations,” Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

Focus on Trade and Investment

The meeting comes at a time when India and the United Kingdom are working towards the early implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which is expected to boost bilateral trade, investment flows and economic cooperation.

Both leaders expressed optimism that the agreement would create new opportunities for growth and prosperity in both countries.

Officials said the talks focused on strengthening investment ties and enhancing collaboration in sectors critical to future economic growth.

Expanding Cooperation in Technology and AI

Prime Minister Modi and Starmer discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, innovation and skills development.

The leaders also explored avenues for collaboration in sports, education and research, aimed at creating long-term benefits for citizens of both countries.

Modi thanked the UK government for its strong participation in the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi earlier this year and welcomed progress made under the Technology Security Initiative.

Strategic Partnership Gains Momentum

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India-UK ties continue to gain momentum across a broad range of sectors, including:

  • Trade and investment
  • Technology and innovation
  • Defence and security
  • Clean energy
  • Education and skills development
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Research and development

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Regional and Global Issues Discussed

Apart from bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on major geopolitical developments, including the conflict in Ukraine and the security situation in West Asia.

The discussions underscored the growing coordination between India and the UK on global challenges and their shared interest in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development.

Strengthening a Future-Oriented Partnership

India and the United Kingdom have significantly expanded their engagement in recent years, with both countries focusing on building a future-oriented partnership driven by innovation, technology and economic cooperation.

Analysts believe the early implementation of the trade agreement, coupled with enhanced collaboration in emerging sectors, could unlock substantial economic opportunities and further strengthen bilateral ties.
