Nation observes grief after death of former Prime Minister; one-day holiday announced
Dhaka (Economy India): Bangladesh is observing three days of state mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, with her funeral scheduled to be held on Wednesday, officials announced on Tuesday.
Zia passed away on Tuesday morning, according to a statement by Muhammad Yunus, Senior Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh. In an address to the nation broadcast on television, Yunus said the government has also declared a one-day public holiday in her honour.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. We urge citizens to maintain restraint and uphold law and order,” Yunus said in his televised address.
State Mourning and Funeral Arrangements
Under the orders issued by the Bangladesh government:
- Wednesday will be observed as the day for Zia’s burial rites.
- A three-day state mourning period has been instituted across the country.
- Government and semi-government offices are expected to lower flags to half-mast in tribute.
The one-day holiday will allow citizens to pay their respects to the former leader, whose political career spanned several decades.
