1,000 Charging Points Planned to Accelerate India’s Electric Mobility Push
New Delhi, November 25: Mahindra & Mahindra on Tuesday announced a major expansion in the electric mobility ecosystem, revealing plans to establish 250 fast-charging stations across India by the end of 2027. Each station will be equipped with 180 kW high-capacity chargers, enabling faster charging for electric SUVs and commercial vehicles.
The Mumbai-based automaker said the network will include 1,000 individual charging points, supporting the government’s goal of accelerating EV adoption through a stronger national charging infrastructure.
Boost to India’s EV Infrastructure
Despite rapid growth in electric vehicle sales, inadequate charging facilities remain a significant challenge for consumers. Long charging hours and limited public chargers often discourage potential buyers, especially for long-distance travel.
Industry experts say Mahindra’s move could help fill a critical infrastructure gap.
“Fast-charging availability is one of the most decisive factors in EV adoption. A larger charging network will improve consumer confidence and increase usage,” said an industry analyst tracking the EV sector.
Strategic Rollout Plan
Mahindra plans to deploy the charging stations in key urban centres, highways, and intercity travel routes, enabling both city users and long-distance travelers to access reliable charging.
Sources indicate that the rollout will likely begin in:
- Delhi-NCR
- Mumbai Metropolitan Region
- Bengaluru
- Pune
- Hyderabad
- Chennai
followed by expansion to tier-2 and tier-3 locations with rising EV demand.
Supporting Government Vision
The initiative aligns with India’s policy push towards clean mobility, supported by:
- FAME-II incentives
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for batteries
- State-level EV subsidies
- Targets for nationwide charging coverage
The government aims to increase the share of EVs in total vehicle sales to 30% by 2030, particularly in the passenger and commercial segments.
Mahindra’s EV Growth Strategy
Mahindra has been strengthening its EV portfolio through its “Born Electric” platform, with upcoming launches in the electric SUV category. The company believes infrastructure readiness will play a crucial role in its success.
In a statement, Mahindra said:
“A robust charging network is essential for India’s EV transition. Our planned 250 stations will significantly enhance accessibility for EV users and support nationwide adoption.”
The company is also exploring partnerships with charging operators, renewable energy providers and retail outlets to optimize location and power access.
Industry Landscape
Mahindra joins other major players such as Tata Power, Hyundai, MG Motor and ChargeZone in expanding fast-charging infrastructure.
According to industry estimates, India currently has less than 20,000 public charging points, far below the projected requirement of over 1 million by 2030.
Analysts believe increased private-sector participation will be crucial to meeting demand.
Key Highlights
- 250 fast-charging stations by 2027
- 1,000 total charging points
- 180 kW high-speed chargers
- Focus on highways and major cities
- Supports government EV adoption targets
- Expected to boost consumer confidence
The charging stations are expected to reduce range anxiety and make long-distance EV travel more practical in India. The expansion also signals growing competition among automakers to build supporting infrastructure, not just vehicles.
Further details regarding investment, partnerships and deployment timelines are expected in the coming months.
