Coal India Sets FY26 Target of 900.2 Million Tonnes to Meet Growing Power Demand

In a bid to meet India’s surging electricity demand and cut reliance on coal imports, Coal India Limited (CIL) has set a record supply target of 900.2 million tonnes (MT) for the fiscal year 2025–26.

Kolkata | Economy India: In a decisive step to address India’s escalating power needs and reduce dependency on coal imports, Coal India Limited (CIL) has set an ambitious coal supply target of 900.2 million tonnes (MT) for the fiscal year 2025–26, according to the company’s recently released annual report.

This marks a significant 18.2% increase from the previous year’s estimated coal supply, reinforcing the company’s central role in ensuring energy security across the country.

🔋 Rising Power Demand Drives Ambitious Targets

India is witnessing a steep increase in electricity consumption, fueled by industrial expansion, the rapid pace of rural electrification, and record-high urban energy needs. In this context, Coal India’s decision to expand supply reflects the urgency to strengthen domestic production.

The company’s latest report highlights that approximately 74% of this coal—nearly 666 MT—is expected to be dispatched exclusively for the power sector, underlining its commitment to sustaining round-the-clock electricity supply across the nation.

“Coal India’s enhanced target is a strategic move to ensure that India’s growing power requirements are met without depending on volatile international coal markets,” a senior CIL official said.

📊 Annual Targets: Then and Now

Financial YearCoal Dispatch (in MT)Growth
FY2023-24703 MT (approx.)—
FY2024-25 (Est.)~760 MT~8.1%
FY2025-26 (Target)900.2 MT18.4%

The year-on-year increase of over 140 million tonnes is among the largest absolute jumps in the company’s operational history.

🌐 Strategic Significance: Import Substitution & Energy Independence

Coal continues to be the backbone of India’s electricity generation, accounting for nearly 70% of total power generation. Despite global trends pushing for green energy, India remains reliant on thermal power to meet its base-load demand.

With the global coal markets experiencing price volatility and supply disruptions, CIL’s push for higher domestic dispatch is being seen as part of a broader government policy toward self-reliance in critical sectors.

“The push for domestic coal aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy,” said energy analyst Ravi Shekhar. “It’s a balance between sustainability and economic pragmatism.”

🏗 Operational Focus: Capacity Enhancement & Logistics

To meet the target, CIL is:

  • Expanding its open-cast mining capacity
  • Fast-tracking environmental clearances for new projects
  • Investing in railway sidings and evacuation infrastructure
  • Enhancing digital monitoring of supply-chain movement

The company has also partnered with Indian Railways to improve last-mile coal delivery and reduce stockpile bottlenecks at thermal power plants.

⚡ Coal & Power: A Symbiotic Link

CIL’s target will be crucial for state and private power generation companies, especially during the high-demand summer and festival seasons. The Ministry of Power has already urged utilities to stock up sufficient coal inventories, and CIL’s stepped-up supply will be key to maintaining grid stability.

🔮 Outlook & Challenges

While the 900.2 MT target reflects confidence, achieving it will depend on:

  • Monsoon-related disruptions in mining areas
  • Labor availability and safety measures
  • Market demand from the power sector
  • Global and domestic price trends

However, the government’s strong policy backing and CIL’s historical delivery performance suggest that the target, though ambitious, is within reach.

Coal India’s 900.2 MT supply target is not just a number—it is a reflection of India’s evolving energy narrative. As the nation walks the tightrope between energy sufficiency and environmental sustainability, Coal India remains at the heart of India’s development journey.
