KOLKATA, (Economy India): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday met the family of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker who allegedly died in police custody in North 24 Parganas district and announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

During his visit, Adhikari also announced Rs 10 lakh in assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the bereaved family. BJP MLA Arjun Singh, senior police officials and local leaders accompanied the chief minister.

The incident has triggered political tensions in the state, with questions being raised over the circumstances surrounding the TMC worker’s death while in police custody. The magisterial probe is expected to examine the events leading up to the death and establish the facts.

The development came a day after former West Bengal chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee faced a hostile reception while visiting the deceased worker’s family in Halisahar. Her vehicle was reportedly surrounded by protesters, who allegedly hurled mud and slippers and shouted slogans at her convoy.

The confrontation has added another layer to an already tense political situation in West Bengal. BJP leaders have condemned the attack on Banerjee and distanced the party from the incident, while the government has moved to investigate the death of the TMC worker.

The magisterial inquiry will now be closely watched as the family seeks answers over the circumstances of the death. The financial assistance announced by the chief minister is also expected to provide immediate support to the bereaved family.
