NEW DELHI, (Economy India): The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on August 13 a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking directions to Karnataka for the immediate release of its share of Cauvery water.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana took note of submissions made by Tamil Nadu’s counsel regarding the state’s water requirements.
The counsel told the court that Tamil Nadu was not receiving its due share of Cauvery water during the current rain-deficient year. The state has sought directions to Karnataka to ensure the release of the water share as required under the existing arrangements.
After hearing the submissions, Chief Justice Surya Kant said the matter would be listed for hearing on Thursday, August 13.
The Cauvery water-sharing issue has historically remained a major point of dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall. Water availability in the Cauvery basin becomes especially important for agriculture and drinking-water needs in the two states.
The Supreme Court’s hearing on August 13 is expected to focus on Tamil Nadu’s plea and the immediate requirement for the release of Cauvery water from Karnataka.
