NEW DELHI (Economy India): At least 16 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents on Saturday as the southwest monsoon continued to lash northern and eastern India, causing flash floods, landslides, and widespread disruption. Jammu and Kashmir was the worst-affected region.

According to officials, 11 people were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts after torrential rainfall triggered landslides and flash floods. Several others are still missing, and rescue teams from multiple agencies have been deployed to search for survivors and provide relief to affected residents.

Other rain-related fatalities were also reported from Uttarakhand and Nagaland, where continuous heavy rainfall damaged roads, disrupted transport, and increased the risk of landslides in hilly areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast active monsoon conditions across North, East, and Northeast India for the next 6–7 days, warning of more heavy rainfall in several states. Meanwhile, rainfall activity is expected to remain below normal over West-Central and South Peninsular India during the same period.

Authorities have advised people living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and follow local weather advisories. Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the worst-hit regions as officials assess the extent of the damage.
