No Complimentary Meals Included; Budget-Friendly Option Offers Lower Fares with Tea and Coffee Still Free

New Delhi (Economy India): Air India has introduced a new ‘Basic’ fare category on select domestic routes, offering passengers a lower-cost travel option while removing complimentary meal services from economy-class tickets.

The airline said the new fare has been launched on a trial basis and is aimed at travelers who prioritize affordability and flexibility over additional onboard services.

Lower Fare, Fewer Inclusions

Under the new Basic fare category, passengers will not receive complimentary meals during their journey. However, Air India will continue to provide free tea and coffee onboard.

The airline believes the move will help price-sensitive travelers access more affordable air travel while paying only for services they wish to use.

Baggage Allowance Defined

Passengers opting for the Basic fare will be entitled to:

🧳 15 kg check-in baggage allowance

🎒 7 kg cabin baggage allowance

The baggage limits are designed to align with the needs of short-distance and budget-conscious travelers.

Meal Pre-Booking Available

Although complimentary meals are not included, passengers will still have the option to purchase meals before departure.

Air India said travelers can pre-book meals up to 24 hours before flight departure.

Available meal options include:

🥗 Vegetarian Meals

🍗 Non-Vegetarian Meals

🕉️ Jain Meals

🩺 Diabetic-Friendly Meals

This allows passengers to customize their travel experience according to their dietary preferences.

Refund and Transfer Facility for Meals

The airline has also clarified its policy regarding pre-purchased meals.

If a flight schedule changes or a passenger is transferred to another flight:

🔄 The purchased meal will be transferred to the new flight whenever possible.

💰 If the meal cannot be provided, passengers will receive a refund for the meal amount.

The policy aims to ensure customer convenience during operational changes.

Existing Fare Categories Remain Available

Air India emphasized that the introduction of the Basic fare does not replace its existing fare options.

Passengers can continue booking:

✔️ Value Fare

✔️ Classic Fare

✔️ Flex Fare

All of these categories will continue to include complimentary meal services and other existing benefits.

Available Through Multiple Booking Channels

The Basic fare category is currently available only on selected domestic routes.

Passengers can book tickets through:

🌐 Air India’s official website

📱 Air India mobile application

📞 Contact center

🏢 Airport ticketing offices

The airline is expected to gradually evaluate demand before expanding availability.

Air India Launches ‘Basic Fare Category
Air India’s introduction of the Basic fare category reflects a growing trend in the aviation industry toward unbundled pricing, allowing passengers to pay only for the services they need. By offering lower fares while maintaining essential travel benefits, the airline hopes to attract budget-conscious travelers and better compete in India’s increasingly price-sensitive domestic aviation market. The success of the initiative will depend on customer response during the ongoing trial phase.

Trial Phase Underway

Air India described the launch as a pilot initiative aimed at understanding customer preferences.

The airline will closely monitor:

📊 Passenger demand

📝 Customer feedback

💺 Booking patterns

💰 Fare competitiveness

The final decision on whether to expand or permanently introduce the Basic fare category will depend on the results of the trial.

What Is a Pilot Phase?

A pilot phase or trial launch is a limited introduction of a new product or service before a full-scale rollout.

Companies use pilot programs to:

🔹 Assess customer response

🔹 Identify operational challenges

🔹 Improve service quality

🔹 Evaluate commercial viability

Air India’s Basic fare is currently being tested under this approach.
