GLASGOW, (Economy India): India’s Jhandu Kumar won the country’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games by securing a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event on Friday.

The 28-year-old athlete, who overcame a childhood affected by polio, poverty, and years of doing odd jobs to support himself, delivered an inspiring performance on the international stage.

Jhandu scored 130.9 points after successfully lifting 181kg and 190kg. He attempted 196kg in his final lift but was unable to complete it, settling for the bronze medal.

His achievement marked India’s opening medal of the Commonwealth Games, providing the country with a strong start in the competition.

Another Indian competitor, Sudhir, finished sixth in the event with 114.1 points despite putting up a determined effort.

Jhandu Kumar’s remarkable journey from adversity to the Commonwealth Games podium stands as a powerful example of resilience and determination, inspiring athletes and sports fans across the country.
