Yes, Breathing Wildfire Smoke Can Harm Your Health

SHARESHARESHARESHARE

BOULDER ( Economy India ): Wildfire smoke is more than just a nuisance—it can pose serious health risks, especially for children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with asthma or heart disease.

Wildfire smoke is a complex mixture of harmful gases and tiny particles. It contains nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These tiny particles can travel deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular problems.

The danger becomes even greater when homes, offices, or other buildings burn during wildfires. Burning furniture, plastics, electronics, paints, and household materials release additional toxic chemicals into the air, making the smoke significantly more hazardous.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed when air quality is poor.
  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter if available.
  • Avoid outdoor exercise during smoky conditions.
  • Wear a properly fitted N95 mask if you must go outside.
  • Follow local air quality alerts and evacuation instructions when necessary.

Taking these precautions can help reduce exposure and protect your health during wildfire events.
