Raipur ( Economy India ):India’s celebrated Pandavani exponent and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai passed away at the age of 70 after a prolonged illness at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, on Sunday. Her death marks the end of an era in Indian folk art and cultural heritage.

Born in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, Teejan Bai transformed the traditional storytelling art of Pandavani into a globally recognized performance. With her powerful voice, dramatic stage presence, and expressive narration of stories from the Mahabharata, she captivated audiences across India and around the world.

Teejan Bai was one of India’s most decorated folk artists. She received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan for her extraordinary contribution to preserving and promoting India’s cultural traditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and several political leaders, artists, and cultural organizations expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing it as an irreparable loss to India’s artistic and cultural legacy.
