Johannesburg (Economy India): South Africa on Friday said there is no immediate cause for concern following reports of two cases of the deadly Nipah virus in India, stressing that the situation does not pose any immediate threat to the country.

The South African Department of Health said it is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), which is keeping continuous watch on the evolving situation.

“There is no need for panic at this stage. There is currently no immediate risk to South Africa,” the health department said in a statement.

Health Authorities Monitoring Situation Closely

The department confirmed that it is working alongside the NICD to assess any potential public health implications and to ensure preparedness, should the situation require further intervention.

Health officials emphasised that existing surveillance and response systems remain active, and any new developments related to the Nipah virus outbreak will be evaluated promptly.

Nipah Virus: A High-Risk but Contained Disease

Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease known for its high fatality rate and is primarily transmitted from animals to humans, with limited human-to-human transmission reported in certain outbreaks. However, health authorities noted that isolated cases do not automatically indicate widespread risk, particularly when containment and monitoring mechanisms are in place.

International Vigilance, No Immediate Travel Advisory

South Africa has not issued any travel advisories or restrictions in response to the reported cases in India. Officials said global health agencies routinely track such developments and exchange information to prevent cross-border spread.

Public health experts reiterated that early detection, surveillance and international cooperation remain key to managing infectious disease risks.
