Four-member committee hands over findings on massive flight cancellations to aviation regulator

New Delhi (Economy India): A four-member committee set up to investigate the widespread cancellation of flights by India’s largest airline IndiGo has submitted its report to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a senior official said on Friday.

The panel was constituted by the DGCA on December 5, following a series of disruptions in IndiGo’s flight operations that saw hundreds of services cancelled over several days, affecting passengers across the country.

Committee Details & Mandate

The probe panel was headed by Sanjay K. Brahmabhane, Joint Director General at the DGCA. The committee was tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the circumstances that led to the large-scale disruption in IndiGo’s flight schedule.

Officials said the panel examined operational data, airline management strategies, resource allocation issues, and other systemic factors that might have contributed to the cancellations.

In its charter, the committee was expected to:

  • Identify root causes of the mass flight disruptions
  • Review airline readiness, crew planning, and fleet deployment
  • Suggest corrective actions for IndiGo and the broader sector
  • Recommend regulatory or policy measures to prevent future disruptions

The submittal of the report marks a key milestone in the regulator’s attempt to ensure accountability and strengthen operational resilience within scheduled carriers.

Background: The Flight Cancellation Crisis

IndiGo, which accounts for a significant share of domestic air traffic in India, faced operational challenges earlier this month when a spike in flight cancellations triggered passenger complaints, regulatory scrutiny, and industry debate.

A combination of factors — including crew shortages, aircraft maintenance issues, weather-related disruptions, and scheduling misalignments — were cited by industry analysts as potential contributors to the turmoil.

Passengers reported last-minute flight cancellations, delays in rebooking, and inconsistent communication from the airline during the peak of the crisis.

DGCA’s Regulatory Response

In response to the incident, the DGCA moved swiftly to investigate the matter through the expert committee and monitor compliance by IndiGo and other scheduled carriers. The regulator also emphasized passenger rights and compensation mechanisms, urging airlines to ensure minimal inconvenience during operational disruptions.

A DGCA spokesperson said:

“The committee has submitted its findings. We will review the recommendations and determine appropriate steps in consultation with stakeholders to strengthen operational protocols and oversight.”

The aviation regulator is expected to review the report in detail before deciding on any enforcement or policy measures.

Industry Impact & Passenger Concerns

The cancellation episode not only disrupted travel plans for thousands of passengers but also raised questions about airline capacity planning and crew management across the industry. While IndiGo remains a dominant player in the domestic market, the incident has triggered calls for sustained efforts to bolster operational robustness.

Consumer groups and industry experts have urged:

  • Better predictive planning for peak travel seasons
  • Enhanced transparency in cancellation policies
  • Adoption of digital tools to improve communication with passengers
  • Stronger oversight of airline resource allocation

Air travel analysts said that a combination of policy mandates and industry best practices would be essential for mitigating future disruptions.

Economy India Perspective

As India’s aviation sector continues to expand, operational challenges among major carriers could have knock-on effects on passenger confidence, sector profitability, and overall travel demand. The DGCA’s inquiry and subsequent measures will be closely watched by industry participants and flyers alike.

The committee’s findings are expected to guide both regulatory and airline-level reforms aimed at sustaining service reliability and safeguarding consumer interests.
