NEW DELHI: (Economy India): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India has made remarkable progress in renewable energy, increasing its solar energy capacity from just 2 GW in 2014 to around 160 GW at present.

Addressing the nation on the 80th Independence Day, Modi said the country is working towards strengthening energy security while meeting the growing electricity demand created by new technologies and industries.

“It is difficult to build a new world. That is why, whether it is a chip, AI, or data centre, we need electricity in large quantity. The new era demands energy,” the Prime Minister said.

Modi highlighted the government’s focus on alternative and renewable energy sources as part of its long-term energy strategy. He said India has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The rapid expansion of solar power is expected to play a major role in achieving this target. Increased renewable capacity can help India reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while supporting the country’s growing economy and technology sector.

The Prime Minister said continued investment in clean energy is essential as India prepares for an era of increasing demand for electricity from sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.

The government has been promoting solar and other renewable energy projects to expand clean power generation and strengthen India’s energy security.
