GANDHINAGAR (Economy India): Gujarat is rapidly positioning itself as India’s next major semiconductor manufacturing hub, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said on Sunday, assuring global investors that the state offers long-term policy stability, infrastructure security, and investment protection for decades.
Speaking at the Semiconnect Conference 2026 in Gandhinagar, Sanghavi said Gujarat’s governance model, industrial ecosystem, and logistics dominance make it a natural destination for semiconductor fabs, chip design units, and electronics manufacturing clusters.
The event was attended by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, senior policymakers, global technology leaders, and semiconductor industry stakeholders.

Gujarat’s Manufacturing and Export Dominance
Highlighting Gujarat’s economic weight, Sanghavi underlined the state’s disproportionate contribution to India’s industrial output.
“Gujarat represents only 5% of India’s population and 6% of its land area, yet contributes over 18% of the country’s manufacturing output, more than 30% of total exports, and over 8% of India’s GDP,” he said.
He added that Gujarat handles over 40% of India’s cargo throughput, reflecting its strength in ports, logistics, and supply chains—critical for semiconductor manufacturing, which relies on precision logistics and uninterrupted global connectivity.

Semiconductor Strategy: Infrastructure, Stability, Scale
Sanghavi stressed that semiconductor investments require predictability over multiple decades, something Gujarat is uniquely positioned to offer.
Key assurances made to investors include:
- Policy continuity beyond political cycles
- Time-bound clearances through single-window systems
- World-class industrial infrastructure
- Reliable power, water, and logistics
- Strong law-and-order and asset protection
“Investments made in Gujarat are protected not just for one generation, but for generations to come,” Sanghavi said, addressing global semiconductor executives.
India’s Semiconductor Mission and Gujarat’s Role
India’s semiconductor push, backed by the central government’s Semicon India Programme, aims to reduce import dependence, strengthen supply-chain resilience, and position India as a trusted alternative manufacturing base amid global geopolitical shifts.
Gujarat has emerged as a frontrunner due to:
- Large land banks for fabs and ancillary units
- Pro-industry labour and land policies
- Existing electronics and chemical manufacturing clusters
- Port-led development model
The presence of senior Union ministers at Semiconnect 2026 reinforced Gujarat’s strategic alignment with New Delhi’s technology and manufacturing roadmap.

Why Global Chipmakers Are Watching Gujarat Closely
Industry experts note that semiconductor fabs demand:
- Long-term regulatory certainty (20–30 years)
- High-quality logistics and export access
- Political stability
- Reliable utilities at scale
Gujarat checks all these boxes, making it one of the most competitive Indian states in the global semiconductor race.
With rising global demand for chips across EVs, AI, defence, telecom, and consumer electronics, Gujarat’s early mover advantage could translate into tens of thousands of high-skill jobs and billions in investments.
Strategic Importance for India’s Economy
A strong domestic semiconductor ecosystem would:
- Reduce India’s electronics import bill
- Strengthen national security
- Support Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat
- Boost exports of high-value technology products
Gujarat’s emergence as a semiconductor hub aligns closely with India’s ambition to become a $5 trillion economy and a global manufacturing powerhouse.
