Godrej Group’s NBFC Strengthens Consumer Lending Business, Targets ₹1 Lakh Crore AUM by 2031
Mumbai (Economy India): Godrej Capital has marked its entry into India’s fast-growing gold loan market by acquiring the gold loan portfolio of Andhra Pradesh-based Kanakadurga Finance for ₹117 crore. The acquisition represents the first-ever acquisition by the Godrej Group’s non-banking financial services arm and forms part of its long-term expansion strategy in retail lending.
The transaction has been executed through Godrej Finance, a wholly owned subsidiary of Godrej Capital.

Strategic Entry into Gold Loan Segment
The acquisition provides Godrej Capital with an immediate foothold in the secured lending market, one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s financial services industry.
Gold loans have witnessed robust demand in recent years due to:
- Quick loan disbursal
- Minimal documentation
- Rising gold prices
- Increasing credit demand from individuals and small businesses
By entering this segment, Godrej Capital aims to diversify its lending portfolio while expanding its reach among retail borrowers.
₹117 Crore Portfolio Acquisition
Under the agreement, Godrej Finance has acquired Kanakadurga Finance’s gold loan business for ₹117 crore.
The acquisition enables the company to:
- Build an established customer base.
- Expand operations in South India.
- Accelerate growth in secured retail lending.
- Strengthen its consumer finance business.
Ambitious Growth Plans
Godrej Capital said the acquisition aligns with its long-term objective of building a ₹1 lakh crore Assets Under Management (AUM) franchise by 2031.
The company also aims to serve more than one million customers over the coming years through expansion across multiple lending segments.
India’s Gold Loan Market Growing Rapidly
India is one of the world’s largest holders of household gold, making gold-backed lending an important financing avenue.
Industry experts expect continued growth in the gold loan market, supported by:
- Rising formalisation of lending.
- Increased demand for secured loans.
- Expansion by banks and NBFCs.
- Digital lending platforms.
- Strong rural and semi-urban credit demand.
The sector has become increasingly competitive as financial institutions seek to capitalize on growing consumer demand.
With its first acquisition, Godrej Capital has taken a significant step toward becoming a larger player in India’s retail lending market. The company’s expansion into gold loans is expected to complement its broader consumer finance strategy while supporting its ambitious AUM growth target over the next decade.
