Congress Informed DMK Before Extending Support to TVK, Says P Chidambaram

Senior Congress Leader Clarifies Party’s Decision, Says Move Was Aimed at Ensuring Stable Government in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI (Economy India): Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has clarified that the Congress party informed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leadership before extending support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emphasizing that the decision was taken in the interest of political stability and governance in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to a private television channel on Saturday, Chidambaram said the Congress consulted its alliance partner DMK before offering support to TVK, which emerged as a key player following the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The Congress, which contested the April 23 Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, was the first political party to announce support to TVK by offering the backing of its five MLAs, helping facilitate government formation.

Support Intended to Prevent Political Uncertainty

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Chidambaram said the primary objective was to avoid another round of elections and ensure political stability in the state.

“We want to prevent another election if TVK failed to secure majority in the House. This was a wider feeling among alliance partners. People also do not want another election,” Chidambaram said.

According to the senior Congress leader, there was a broad consensus among alliance partners that Tamil Nadu should avoid prolonged political uncertainty and focus on governance and development priorities.

Congress-DMK Alliance Remains Intact

Chidambaram’s remarks come amid political discussions regarding the Congress party’s support to TVK and its implications for the DMK-led alliance.

The Congress leader sought to dispel speculation by stating that the DMK leadership had been informed in advance and that the move should not be viewed as a departure from the alliance framework.

Political observers believe the clarification is aimed at maintaining coordination within the opposition alliance while ensuring stability in the post-election political landscape.

Government Formation and Coalition Dynamics

The Tamil Nadu Assembly election produced a political scenario that required negotiations among parties to ensure a stable government.

In parliamentary democracies, parties often extend support to prevent political deadlock, particularly when no single formation secures a clear legislative majority.

Analysts note that Congress’ support to TVK reflects a pragmatic approach focused on governance continuity rather than immediate electoral considerations.

Focus on Stability and Governance

Political experts argue that frequent elections can create administrative uncertainty, delay policy implementation and increase public expenditure.

By supporting government formation, alliance partners sought to:

  • Ensure administrative continuity
  • Avoid fresh elections
  • Maintain policy momentum
  • Promote political stability
  • Address governance priorities

Chidambaram indicated that these considerations played a significant role in the Congress party’s decision-making process.

Tamil Nadu’s Evolving Political Landscape

The emergence of TVK has added a new dimension to Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.

The post-election developments are being closely watched as political parties recalibrate their strategies ahead of future electoral contests.

Observers believe coalition-building and issue-based cooperation may continue to play an important role in shaping the state’s political landscape.

Chidambaram’s statement seeks to reinforce the message that Congress’ support to TVK was undertaken transparently and in consultation with its alliance partner DMK.

As the new government settles into office, attention will shift toward governance, policy implementation and the evolving dynamics among Tamil Nadu’s major political parties.
