New Delhi (Economy India): The Indian National Congress on Friday paid homage to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his death anniversary, lauding his leadership for strengthening India’s economy and democratic institutions.

In a statement issued on December 26, Congress leaders remembered Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to India’s growth trajectory, saying his policy vision and statesmanship helped shape a modern, resilient economic framework while upholding democratic values.

Remembering a Stalwart Leader

Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932 in the village of Gah, located in the former undivided Punjab — now part of Pakistan. He served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, becoming the country’s first Sikh to hold the office.

His tenure is widely credited with advancing economic reforms, fostering inclusive growth, and reinforcing the institutional strength of India’s parliamentary democracy.

Congress Statement on His Legacy

In its tribute, the Congress highlighted several key aspects of Dr. Singh’s tenure:

  • Economic Reforms: Spearheading policies that supported liberalization and investment
  • Democratic Strengthening: Upholding constitutional values and institutional autonomy
  • Inclusive Growth: Advocating social welfare measures alongside economic progress
  • Global Engagement: Elevating India’s standing on the international stage

Party officials described Dr. Singh as a leader whose integrity, humility, and intellectual depth won respect across political lines.

Nation’s Reflection on Leadership

Across political and academic circles, observers noted that Dr. Singh’s approach combined economic expertise with ethical governance. His background as an economist — having served as Finance Minister earlier in his career — gave him an edge in steering India through complex fiscal and external sector challenges.

Leaders and commentators also recalled his calm demeanor during times of crisis and his commitment to democratic norms, even in the face of political turbulence.

Economy India Perspective

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure holds enduring relevance in contemporary policy debates, particularly on issues of economic stability, structural reforms, and democratic resilience. As India charts its path toward long-term growth, reflections on his leadership offer insights into balancing reform with institutional strength.
