Chhattisgarh Launches City Gas Infrastructure Project to Boost Clean Energy and Urban Development

SHARESHARESHARESHARE

Raipur (Economy India): Chhattisgarh has taken a major step toward clean energy adoption, environmental protection, and modern urban infrastructure with the launch of the City Gas Infrastructure Project, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said on Thursday.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the project at a private hotel in Raipur, flagging off CNG-powered vehicles and formally initiating piped natural gas (PNG) services for domestic and commercial consumers. He also interacted with Raipur Municipal Corporation’s first PNG household consumer, Mrs. Poonam Chaubey, to understand the on-ground experience of using piped gas for domestic cooking.

Clean Energy as a Core Development Priority

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said Chhattisgarh is celebrating 25 years of statehood and has made consistent progress across multiple development sectors. The City Gas Infrastructure Project, he said, represents a new milestone in the state’s development journey.

“This initiative is not merely an urban utility project. It reflects Chhattisgarh’s strong commitment to clean energy, environmental conservation, and modern infrastructure,” the Chief Minister stated.

He emphasized that the project aligns with the government’s vision of building a Green Chhattisgarh and Smart Chhattisgarh, where economic growth and environmental responsibility move forward together.

PNG for Homes and Businesses on Metro-City Lines

Under the project, Domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) will be supplied to households and commercial establishments through underground pipelines, similar to systems operational in major metropolitan cities across India.

The Chief Minister highlighted several advantages of PNG:

  • Elimination of LPG cylinder refilling hassles
  • Improved safety due to continuous gas supply
  • Cost-effective and cleaner energy for households
  • Enhanced convenience for restaurants, hotels, and commercial units

He added that affordable and reliable energy access would also accelerate industrial activity and strengthen the state’s investment ecosystem.

CNG to Reduce Pollution and Fuel Costs

Alongside PNG, the project will provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles, significantly reducing vehicular emissions and fuel expenses for citizens.

The Chief Minister congratulated the HCG Group and expressed confidence that the company would rapidly expand the CNG station network across Raipur, Balodabazar, and Gariaband districts.

“With increased use of CNG in transport, urban air quality will improve and citizens will benefit from lower fuel costs,” he said.

Infrastructure Push Backed by State Budget

Referring to the recently presented state budget, the Chief Minister noted that substantial allocations have been made for infrastructure development across urban and rural areas.

“Our goal is to ensure that people across Chhattisgarh experience facilities comparable to metro cities. Infrastructure expansion is central to inclusive growth,” he said.

He reiterated that the state government is prioritising green energy solutions, ensuring that development does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.

Public Participation Key to Green Transition

The Chief Minister appealed to citizens to actively adopt clean fuels and contribute to environmental protection.

“Public participation is essential for building a greener, developed, and self-reliant Chhattisgarh. Clean energy choices today will define the quality of life for future generations,” he said.

Project Coverage and Industry Participation

The City Gas Infrastructure Project has been launched across Raipur, Balodabazar, and Gariaband districts. It includes:

  • PNG supply for households and commercial establishments
  • CNG availability for the transport sector
  • Development of city-wide gas distribution networks

Senior representatives from the HCG Group, including Managing Director Rahul Chopra, Director Rajeev Mathur, Chairman Deepak Sawant, along with officials from GAIL India and members of the industry were present at the event.

A Strategic Step Toward Sustainable Urban Growth

Policy experts view the City Gas Infrastructure Project as a strategic intervention that supports India’s broader energy transition goals. By shifting households and transport toward natural gas, Chhattisgarh is expected to:

  • Reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Improve urban air quality
  • Strengthen energy security

The initiative positions the state as an emerging model for balanced growth driven by sustainability, infrastructure, and investment readiness.

📌 Economy India Note

The City Gas Infrastructure Project underscores how state-level policy interventions can align economic development with environmental priorities—an increasingly critical balance in India’s next phase of urban and industrial expansion.
