Move to New State-of-the-Art Terminal Expected to Enhance Passenger Experience and Strengthen Global Connectivity

New Delhi (Economy India): Air India has announced that it will shift its operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York to the airport’s new Terminal 6 (T6) beginning in 2028, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s global expansion and customer experience strategy.

The airline currently operates its New York flights from Terminal 4 (T4). The transition to T6 is expected to provide passengers with modern airport facilities, improved connectivity, and a seamless travel experience.

Air India to Operate from JFK’s New Terminal 6

According to the airline, Terminal 6 is part of JFK Airport’s multi-billion-dollar redevelopment project aimed at transforming the airport into one of the world’s most modern aviation hubs.

The new terminal will feature:

  • Advanced passenger processing systems.
  • Modern check-in and security facilities.
  • Spacious lounges and retail outlets.
  • Improved baggage handling systems.
  • Enhanced international connectivity.

The move aligns with Air India’s ongoing transformation under the Tata Group, which has focused heavily on fleet modernization, network expansion, and premium customer service.

Terminal 6 to Open in Two Phases

The airport redevelopment project will be completed in stages:

  • 2026: First set of gates at Terminal 6 to become operational.
  • 2028: Remaining gates and full terminal completion, when Air India will begin operating from the new facility.

This phased rollout will allow airlines to gradually transition to the new terminal while minimizing operational disruptions.

Boost to Passenger Experience

The relocation is expected to offer several benefits for travelers flying between India and the United States, including:

  • Faster check-in and immigration processes.
  • Better passenger amenities.
  • Improved connectivity with partner airlines.
  • Reduced transit times.
  • Enhanced airport infrastructure and services.

The new terminal is designed to deliver a premium travel experience comparable to leading international airports.

Strengthening Air India’s Global Network

The shift to Terminal 6 complements Air India’s ambitious growth strategy, which includes:

  • Expansion of international routes.
  • Induction of new-generation aircraft.
  • Upgraded onboard products and services.
  • Greater integration with global airline partners.

The airline has been steadily strengthening its presence in North America, one of its most important international markets.

Air India’s move to JFK Terminal 6 underscores its commitment to delivering world-class travel experiences while supporting its long-term global expansion plans. As JFK’s redevelopment progresses, the airline is expected to benefit from enhanced infrastructure, greater operational efficiency, and improved passenger satisfaction.
