NEW DELHI (Economy India): In a significant operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized gold, silver, and cash worth ₹4.01 crore from trains arriving at New Delhi Railway Station. This action comes amidst heightened surveillance to curb illegal activities during elections in Haryana and Jammu-Kashmir.

On September 5, 2024, the operation was initiated following a tip-off from a reliable source. The RPF’s vigilance has been instrumental in ensuring election integrity by preventing unlawful activities and enforcing the Model Code of Conduct.

Seizure of Gold, Silver, and Cash

During a coordinated inspection of multiple trains, the RPF discovered 24 suspicious packages. These packages, initially appearing to be ordinary parcels, were found to contain:

  • 498 grams of gold bars
  • 365 kilograms of silver
  • ₹85.72 lakh in unaccounted cash

The total value of the seized items was estimated at ₹4.01 crore. The RPF worked closely with the Income Tax Department to document the confiscated goods and secure them for further investigation.

Targeting Illegal Transport during Elections

This operation aligns with broader efforts to ensure safe and fair elections in Haryana and Jammu-Kashmir. The RPF deployed 60 companies of personnel across these states between August 16 and October 5, 2024 to maintain law and order during the election period.

In addition to the New Delhi seizure, the RPF’s vigilant operations during the election period resulted in the interception of illegal goods worth ₹12.86 crore, including:

  • Narcotics
  • Smuggled alcohol
  • Unaccounted cash
  • Items intended to influence voters

These efforts ensured strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, preventing attempts to manipulate the election process.

Director General Lauds RPF Team’s Efforts

Praising the team’s dedication, Manoj Yadav, Director General of the Railway Protection Force, said:
“Each election is a vital moment for our democracy. Through targeted seizures and vigilant monitoring, we are always on guard to safeguard the electoral process. I commend the RPF team for their unwavering commitment and hard work in securing both our railway network and our democracy.”

Ensuring Free and Fair Elections

The RPF’s swift action reflects its commitment to not only securing transportation networks but also contributing to democratic governance. By curbing illegal activities during the election period, the RPF has played a key role in ensuring citizens can vote without fear or manipulation.

The seizure at New Delhi Railway Station serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding democratic processes. With these efforts, the RPF has strengthened public confidence in elections and demonstrated its dedication to law enforcement.
