EconomyIndia: In a significant move towards realizing the internationalization goals envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Ministry of Education has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the University of Southampton (UoS), UK. This letter allows UoS, ranked among the top 100 global higher education institutions, to establish its first campus in India. The presence of UoS in India will enhance the country’s educational landscape, offering students the opportunity to receive an education grounded in Indian values with a global perspective. UoS is the first foreign university to receive an LoI under the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations for establishing an Indian campus.

The LoI was handed over at a special event in New Delhi titled “Internationalization of Education under NEP 2020: Establishing a Foreign University Campus in India.” The event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who expressed his delight at the issuance of the LoI, which will enable UoS to set up a campus in India under NEP 2020. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted that this initiative reflects India’s commitment to elevating educational standards to the highest global levels and fulfilling the educational collaboration pillar of the India-UK partnership. He emphasized that such efforts will prepare Indian youth for global challenges while fostering a spirit of global understanding and cooperation.

Key attendees at the event included Mr. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education; Mr. Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs; Ms. Christina Scott, Deputy High Commissioner of the UK in India; Mr. Andrew Atherton, Vice President (International) of the University of Southampton; Mr. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of UGC; esteemed ambassadors, renowned academicians from private and state universities, industry representatives, and other distinguished guests.

Union Minister for Education and Skill Development, Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, remarked that India is committed to fulfilling its global responsibilities as a ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (World Friend) by building a bright future through education, innovation, and progress. The establishment of the UoS campus in India is a testament to the strong educational ties between India and the UK, and it aligns with India’s vision of creating a world-class educational environment that nurtures both global and Indian values.
