WASHINGTON: (Economy india):US President Donald Trump has cited India’s voter identification system while arguing for stricter voter identification requirements in the United States.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had questioned how elections in the US could be conducted without requiring every voter to present a valid photo identification document.

Trump used the comparison to underline his support for mandatory photo identification for US voters, saying such requirements could help prevent what he described as “electoral fraud.”

The US president also referred to India’s use of postal ballots during its recent general election. According to Trump, less than one per cent of Indian voters used postal ballots and voters were required to have valid photo identity documents.

His comments came as his administration seeks greater support for the SAVE America Act, legislation that would introduce stricter requirements for voter registration and voting in federal elections.

What is the SAVE America Act?

The legislation would require people registering to vote in federal elections to provide proof of US citizenship. It also seeks to establish a nationwide voter identification requirement.

Another major provision would impose tighter restrictions on voting by mail.

Supporters of the legislation argue that stronger identification and citizenship requirements are necessary to protect the integrity of US elections and prevent non-citizens from voting.

Opponents, however, have raised concerns that stricter documentation requirements could make voting more difficult for some eligible Americans, particularly people who do not have easy access to required identification or citizenship documents.

India-US election comparison

Trump’s reference to India places the debate over voter identification in the US against the backdrop of one of the world’s largest electoral systems.

India uses voter identification documents as part of its election process, while voting procedures and identification requirements in the United States vary across states.

The comparison has therefore become part of a wider political debate in America over how elections should be administered and what safeguards should be used to protect the voting process.

Trump has repeatedly made election integrity a central political issue and has called for stronger identification requirements for American voters.

The SAVE America Act is now being promoted as part of that broader effort, with supporters arguing that nationwide rules would create a more consistent system for federal elections.

The debate is expected to continue as lawmakers consider the proposed legislation and its potential impact on voter registration, identification and mail-in voting across the United States.
