Gangtok, ( Economy India ): Eight workers lost their lives after an under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project collapsed in Sikkim’s Namchi district following a landslide, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang confirmed on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at the Samardung tunnel in Jholungey on Monday afternoon when a landslide blocked the tunnel entrance, trapping around 27 workers inside. Rescue teams faced major challenges due to a suspected gas leak inside the tunnel, causing several rescuers to experience dizziness and lose consciousness during the operation.

Chief Minister Tamang said Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to him to inquire about the incident and the progress of rescue efforts. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured the Sikkim government of all possible assistance from the Centre.

Officials believe the hazardous gas inside the tunnel is naturally released from underground rock formations disturbed by the landslide, making rescue operations extremely difficult. Authorities continue to monitor the site while ensuring the safety of rescue personnel.
