Washington Says Move Aims to Stabilize Global Energy Markets
New York/Washington (Economy India): The United States has urged India to purchase Russian oil cargoes already floating at sea and redirect them to Indian refineries in an effort to ease concerns over potential supply shortages and rising prices amid tensions in West Asia.
Speaking in an interview with CNN on Sunday, Chris Wright said the proposal is a short-term and pragmatic step aimed at stabilizing global energy markets.
However, he clarified that the move does not represent any shift in Washington’s broader policy toward Russia.

Discussions With Indian Authorities
According to Wright, he and Scott Bessent held discussions with Indian officials regarding the purchase of Russian crude shipments currently waiting to be unloaded at Chinese refineries.
These cargoes are already in transit or anchored at sea, and redirecting them to Indian refineries could help avoid supply disruptions and reduce the risk of price volatility in the global oil market.
Energy analysts say such a move could provide temporary relief to markets amid geopolitical uncertainty.
Concerns Over Global Oil Supply
The suggestion comes as global energy markets remain sensitive to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, a region that plays a critical role in global oil supply.
Any disruption in the region could potentially affect international crude prices and create uncertainty in energy markets.
Experts believe that ensuring smooth oil flows to major consumers like India is important for maintaining global energy stability.

India’s Role in Global Oil Trade
India has emerged as one of the largest buyers of discounted Russian crude since the start of the Russia–Ukraine War.
Indian refiners have increased imports of Russian oil significantly in recent years, taking advantage of competitive pricing and flexible shipping arrangements.
The country’s large refining capacity and growing energy demand make it a key player in the global crude oil market.
Short-Term Market Stabilization
Officials in Washington emphasized that encouraging India to purchase the floating cargoes is intended only as a temporary measure to stabilize supply and calm market fears.
The US continues to maintain its broader sanctions and policy framework concerning Russia.
Market observers note that pragmatic energy arrangements often emerge during periods of global supply uncertainty.
