CHENNAI, (Economy india): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced a major expansion of the state’s healthcare support by increasing the annual coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

The decision is aimed at providing greater financial protection to families facing high medical expenses and ensuring that access to quality healthcare does not depend on a person’s income or place of residence.

Announcing the initiative, the chief minister said medical care is a fundamental right, not a privilege. The government, he said, is committed to removing financial and geographical barriers that prevent people from receiving timely and quality treatment.

The five-fold increase in insurance coverage is expected to provide stronger support for beneficiaries requiring expensive treatments, surgeries and specialised medical care. It also represents a significant expansion of the state’s healthcare safety net.

The government said the new initiatives are part of broader efforts to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s healthcare system and make medical services more accessible to people across the state.

With the annual coverage now increased to Rs 25 lakh, the scheme is expected to offer beneficiaries greater financial security during serious illnesses and reduce the burden of out-of-pocket medical expenses on families.
