Central bank to absorb surplus liquidity through variable rate reverse repo auction; funds to be reversed on October 7
MUMBAI (Economy India): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will conduct a 30-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction for Rs 7 lakh crore on September 7, 2026, as part of its ongoing management of liquidity conditions in the banking system.
According to an RBI notification issued on Friday, the auction will be conducted between 9:30 am and 10:00 am on Monday.
The funds absorbed through the operation will be reversed on October 7, 2026, completing the 30-day tenor of the liquidity operation.
RBI Reviews Evolving Liquidity Conditions
The central bank said the decision was taken after reviewing the current and evolving liquidity conditions.
“On a review of the current and evolving liquidity conditions, it has been decided to conduct a Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction on Monday, September 7, 2026,” the RBI said in its release.
The move is aimed at managing liquidity in the banking system and ensuring that short-term money market conditions remain aligned with the central bank’s monetary policy framework.
What is a VRRR Auction?
A Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction is a liquidity management tool used by the RBI to absorb excess liquidity from the banking system.
Under a reverse repo operation, banks and other eligible financial institutions park surplus funds with the RBI for a specified period. In return, they receive interest at a rate determined through the auction process.
Unlike a fixed-rate operation, the interest rate in a variable rate reverse repo auction is determined through competitive bidding.
Rs 7 Lakh Crore Liquidity Operation
The notified amount for the September 7 operation is Rs 7 lakh crore, making it a significant liquidity management exercise.
The 30-day tenor means the funds accepted under the operation will remain with the RBI until the scheduled reversal date of October 7.
Such operations allow the central bank to fine-tune liquidity conditions without making an immediate change to the broader policy stance.
Impact on Banking and Money Markets
The VRRR auction will be closely watched by banks, financial institutions and money-market participants as the outcome can influence short-term liquidity and overnight money-market rates.
A large liquidity absorption operation can help prevent excess funds from putting downward pressure on short-term interest rates, while also helping the RBI maintain orderly conditions in the financial system.
The auction is therefore an important part of the RBI’s toolkit for balancing liquidity with the evolving needs of the Indian economy.
