Mumbai (Economy India): Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has received a death threat through a WhatsApp voice note, in which the sender allegedly demanded a ransom amount running into crores of rupees. Following the threat, Mumbai Police have significantly enhanced security outside the actor’s residence in Bandra and launched a detailed investigation into the matter.

According to sources, the threatening voice message was received on Tuesday. The caller warned of dire consequences if the ransom demand was not met, prompting immediate action from law enforcement agencies. Senior police officials confirmed that additional police personnel have been deployed near Singh’s home, and strict monitoring of visitors and vehicular movement is underway.

The Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch and Cyber Cell have jointly taken charge of the investigation. Officials said the WhatsApp number used to send the threat, along with the voice sample, has been sent for forensic analysis. Efforts are being made to trace the sender’s location and identify possible links to organised crime networks.

“The voice note contains explicit threats and a clear demand for a large sum of money. We are examining technical evidence and digital trails to identify the accused at the earliest,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The threat to Ranveer Singh has raised concerns within the film industry, particularly as it comes days after a firing incident outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence in Mumbai on January 31. Police are investigating whether there is any connection between the two incidents or if the threat to Singh is an independent attempt at extortion.

Officials have not ruled out the possibility that the threat may be aimed at creating fear or publicity. However, given the seriousness of the message and recent security-related incidents involving high-profile individuals, authorities are treating the case with utmost caution.

Ranveer Singh, one of Bollywood’s leading actors, was last seen in the recently released film Dhurandhar, where he played the role of an undercover intelligence agent. The actor has not made any public statement regarding the threat so far.

Police sources said Singh and his family are cooperating fully with the investigation. Security protocols around the actor’s professional engagements may also be reviewed in the coming days, depending on the outcome of the probe.

Mumbai Police have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the actor and to apprehend the person behind the threat. “We are confident of making a breakthrough soon,” an official added.

The incident once again highlights growing concerns around the security of public figures and the misuse of digital platforms such as messaging apps for criminal activities. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious communications immediately and warned of strict action against those involved in extortion and threats.
