GAIL Positioned to Lead India’s Refinery-Petrochemical-Gas Integration, Says Director (Business Development)

Hyderabad ( Economy India): At the 28th Energy Technology Meet, held at the Hyderabad International Exhibition Centre from October 28th to 30th, Shri R.K. Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL (India) Limited, participated as a distinguished panellist in a high-level discussion on “Powering Refining and Petrochemical towards Excellence and Agility.”

The panel brought together senior leaders and experts from the global oil and gas industry to deliberate on the evolving dynamics of energy transition, refinery modernisation, and petrochemical integration.

“Energy Landscape is Transforming”: R.K. Singhal

Addressing the audience, Shri Singhal remarked,

“Today, the entire energy landscape is transforming. The challenge before us is threefold — to meet growing energy demand efficiently, drive economic growth through value-added products like petrochemicals, and, at the same time, cut down carbon emissions. In this trilemma, I would say GAIL is uniquely placed and fully ready to seize the opportunities ahead.”

He emphasised that GAIL is leveraging its strengths to integrate gas and petrochemical value chains — aligning with the emerging refinery–petrochemical–gas synergy model that is shaping the future of the energy sector.

GAIL’s Expanding Role in India’s Gas-Based Economy

In his keynote, Shri Singhal underlined that GAIL has been instrumental in strengthening India’s gas-based economy, supported by its extensive natural gas pipeline network spanning over 16,000 km across the country.

This robust infrastructure is enabling industries and refineries to reduce carbon emissions by transitioning to cleaner gaseous fuels — a key step in India’s decarbonisation journey.

“Through innovation, strategic investments, and sustainable infrastructure, GAIL continues to ‘energise possibilities’ in every sector it touches,” he said.

Pioneering Petrochemical Initiatives

Shri Singhal shared insights into GAIL’s upcoming projects that are set to redefine India’s petrochemical landscape.

  • Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH) Project at Usar:
India’s first PDH plant with a capacity of 500 KTA of propylene, marking a major milestone in the nation’s petrochemical self-reliance.
  • GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL):
A new venture that will produce 1.25 MMTPA of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) — a crucial raw material for the polyester industry. The project will significantly reduce India’s import dependence and enhance domestic manufacturing capacity.

Additionally, GAIL is diversifying into specialty chemicals, tapping into high-value segments that support the country’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat visions.

“Energising Possibilities” – The GAIL Way Forward

Concluding his remarks, Shri Singhal reiterated GAIL’s commitment to sustainable growth under its brand philosophy — “Energising Possibilities.”
He said the company remains dedicated to advancing India’s clean energy transition through gas integration, petrochemical expansion, and green innovation.
