Raipur (Economy India): The Chhattisgarh Government informed the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday that outstanding electricity dues in the state stood at ₹5,853.86 crore as of May 2026, with government departments accounting for ₹3,117.49 crore of the total unpaid amount.

The remaining ₹2,736.37 crore is owed by non-government consumers to the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL).

Government Departments Account for Majority of Dues

The data presented in the Assembly revealed that unpaid electricity bills from various state government departments constitute more than half of the total outstanding amount.

The figures underline the financial burden on the state’s power distribution utility, which relies on timely bill collections to maintain operations, upgrade infrastructure, and ensure uninterrupted power supply.

According to the information shared in the Assembly:

CategoryOutstanding Dues
Government Departments₹3,117.49 crore
Non-Government Consumers₹2,736.37 crore
Total Outstanding₹5,853.86 crore

The dues were pending with the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) as of May 2026.

Impact on Power Distribution

Large outstanding receivables can affect the financial health of electricity distribution companies by limiting cash flows available for:

  • Power purchase payments
  • Maintenance of transmission and distribution infrastructure
  • Network modernization
  • Rural electrification projects
  • Service quality improvements

Power distribution companies across India have been working to improve billing efficiency and recover pending dues through digital payments, consumer awareness, and stricter collection mechanisms.

Importance of Timely Payments

Experts note that regular payment of electricity bills by both government institutions and private consumers is essential to ensure the financial sustainability of distribution companies and maintain reliable electricity services.

Reducing outstanding dues also supports investments in grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and improved customer services.
