Washington/New Delhi (Economy India): US President Donald Trump has announced that Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries will partner in building the first new oil refinery in the United States in nearly 50 years, describing the project as the “biggest refinery in US history.”
The refinery is planned in Brownsville, located in the US state of Texas, and will be designed to run entirely on domestically produced shale oil, according to project developer America First Refining.

A Historic Refining Project in the United States
The refinery project is considered significant because the US has not built a major new oil refinery in decades. If completed as planned, the facility will mark the first large-scale refinery constructed in the country in around half a century.
President Trump highlighted the investment as a milestone for American energy independence and industrial expansion. The project is also expected to strengthen energy ties between the United States and India.
Reliance Signs Long-Term Fuel Purchase Agreement
As part of the project, Reliance Industries has signed a 20-year agreement to purchase fuels produced at the refinery.
Industry experts say the agreement ensures long-term demand stability for the refinery while enabling Reliance to secure access to refined petroleum products linked to US shale production.

Construction Timeline
According to America First Refining, groundbreaking for the refinery is expected in the second quarter of 2026. Once completed, the facility will process crude oil derived from US shale fields, which have significantly expanded American oil production in recent years.
Strategic Importance for Global Energy Markets
The investment reflects the growing global footprint of Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest conglomerates with major operations in energy, petrochemicals, retail, and technology.
Energy analysts believe the refinery could strengthen global energy supply chains and deepen strategic cooperation between India and the United States in the energy sector.
If realized, the project may also play a role in stabilizing fuel supplies and supporting refining capacity in North America.
