Dehradun, (Economy India): Efforts to revive the famous Doon Basmati rice, celebrated for its rich aroma and premium taste, are gaining momentum in Uttarakhand. Around 160 farmers in Dehradun district have started planting the traditional rice variety across 75 hectares during the current cultivation season, marking a significant step toward restoring its legacy.
The revival initiative is being carried out through the joint efforts of the Dehradun district administration, the Agriculture Department, and the Gramotthan Pariyojana. The program aims not only to increase cultivation but also to improve farmers’ incomes by ensuring better market access, conserving high-quality seeds, strengthening scientific testing, and developing a strong brand identity for Doon Basmati.
District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan said that the project delivered encouraging results during its initial trial in 2025, when Doon Basmati was cultivated on 65 hectares of land. Following the positive response from farmers and favorable crop performance, authorities expanded the cultivation area to 75 hectares this year, with more farmers joining the initiative.
Doon Basmati has long been regarded as one of India’s premium aromatic rice varieties, known for its unique fragrance, long grains, and exceptional cooking quality. However, over the years, cultivation declined due to changing agricultural practices, urban expansion, and the popularity of higher-yielding crop varieties. The current revival program seeks to restore the crop’s historical importance while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local farmers.
Officials believe that branding and promoting authentic Doon Basmati in domestic and international markets could significantly enhance its commercial value. By focusing on quality seed preservation, certification, and scientific cultivation methods, the government hopes to protect the crop’s authenticity and increase consumer confidence.
Experts also note that the revival of indigenous crop varieties like Doon Basmati helps preserve agricultural biodiversity while promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices. If the initiative continues to receive positive support from farmers and consumers, Doon Basmati could once again emerge as one of Uttarakhand’s flagship agricultural products, benefiting both the regional economy and the state’s farming community.
