Railways to mandate mobile OTP verification for all Tatkal window bookings; chart preparation time doubled to 8 hours to improve transparency and curb fraud.

New Delhi (Economy India): Indian Railways is set to bring a major change to its Tatkal ticketing system by making OTP verification mandatory for all Tatkal window bookings. Passengers will now have to authenticate their mobile number through a One-Time Password (OTP) before the counter issues a confirmed Tatkal ticket. The system, tested successfully in a pilot run, will be rolled out nationwide within the next few days.

Alongside this, Railways has also approved a significant operational change: train chart preparation will now take place 8 hours before departure, instead of the earlier 4 hours. The move aims to give waiting-list passengers more planning time and reduce last-minute confusion.

The reforms have been approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who emphasised the need to curb misuse of Tatkal quotas and enhance transparency in ticketing.

OTP System to Prevent Fraud and Ensure Genuine Bookings

Tatkal tickets are in highest demand, often resulting in long queues and misuse by touts. Currently, window bookings require no identity verification, enabling fraudulent bookings and causing difficulties for genuine passengers.

Under the new mechanism:

  • Passenger provides mobile number at the booking counter
  • An OTP is sent to the mobile
  • Ticket is confirmed only after OTP verification

This ensures that only the actual traveller can secure a Tatkal ticket, making the system fully traceable and safe.

Railways officials stated that the OTP system is already successful in general reservation since October 2025 and has significantly reduced fake bookings.

Pilot Test Conducted on 52 Trains; Nationwide Rollout Begins

The OTP verification system was trialled on 52 trains starting 17 November 2025. The results were positive, leading to the decision to expand it to all trains.

The rollout will be done in phases, ensuring smooth implementation across all zones without operational disruption.

Railways’ internal assessment revealed a marked reduction in fraudulent activities during the pilot, prompting accelerated approval for nationwide deployment.

Chart Preparation Now 8 Hours Before Departure

To further improve transparency and help passengers plan better, Railways has increased the chart preparation time from 4 hours to 8 hours before train departure.

This change will benefit:

  • Waiting-list passengers, who will know their ticket status earlier
  • Travellers planning alternatives, such as other trains, buses, or flight connections
  • Peak-season travellers, where demand is high and last-minute uncertainty causes stress

For example, if a passenger’s ticket remains unconfirmed, they will now have ample time to arrange alternative transportation.

Long-Standing Issues Prompt Reforms

Railways has received complaints for years regarding misuse of Tatkal quotas and manipulation by unauthorized agents.

Recent digital reforms include:

  • July 2025: Aadhaar-based authentication introduced for online Tatkal bookings
  • October 2025: OTP verification introduced for general reservation
  • Multiple internal audits to identify vulnerabilities in the ticketing process

The new OTP system for counter Tatkal booking completes this reform cycle, bridging gaps between online and offline ticket security.

Railways Accelerates Digital Transformation

Railways said the long-term vision is to make the entire ticketing ecosystem digital, transparent, and user-friendly.

Upcoming digital upgrades include:

  • Improved IRCTC App interface
  • Possible future introduction of face recognition and biometric verification
  • Better integration between ticketing data and security systems
  • Zone-wise rollout of upgraded chart preparation systems

Railways aims to implement all reforms completely by end of 2025.

What Passengers Should Do

Passengers using Tatkal window booking must:

  • Keep their mobile number active and updated
  • Ensure network availability at the booking time
  • Reach the counter with valid ID documents

Without OTP verification, Tatkal tickets will not be issued.

The OTP-based Tatkal window booking system marks one of the most significant reforms in the Indian Railways ticketing process in recent years. It aims to curb fraud, empower genuine passengers, and streamline booking operations nationwide. Combined with early chart preparation, the new system will offer passengers a smoother, more transparent travel experience.
