CBDT extends tax audit submission deadline by a month in response to professionals’ and businessmen’s requests amid natural disruptions, easing compliance pressures.
Mumbai (Economy India): The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for submitting tax audit reports for the financial year 2024-25 from September 30 to October 31, 2025, following requests from professionals and business communities. The extension comes in light of multiple challenges, including disruptions caused by floods and other natural calamities across several states.
The Income Tax Department clarified that the ITR filing deadline remains unchanged, ensuring taxpayers continue to file returns by the original deadline of July 31, 2025.
Reason for the Extension
The extension has been granted primarily due to operational difficulties faced by professionals, including Chartered Accountants, who highlighted the challenge of completing audits on time. Many businesses also experienced interruptions in their normal operations due to floods and other natural disasters, which impacted compliance schedules.
According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), “Floods and other calamities have significantly disrupted regular operations, making timely compliance difficult. This extension is intended to provide relief to affected taxpayers.”
Who Can Benefit from the Extension?
The extension applies mainly to taxpayers required to undergo tax audits under Section 139(1), Explanation 2(a) of the Income Tax Act. This includes:
- Businessmen with high turnover
- Professionals who are subject to mandatory audits
Smaller taxpayers and salaried individuals are not affected by this extension.

Portal Status and Submissions
The CBDT has assured taxpayers that the Income Tax e-filing portal is fully functional and stable. As of September 24, 2025, over 4.02 lakh tax audit reports had been successfully uploaded, including more than 60,000 submissions on the same day.
Meanwhile, the total number of ITRs filed up to September 23, 2025, reached 7.57 crore, indicating that portal functionality is robust and operational delays were caused primarily by external factors.
Official Notification
CBDT has confirmed that a formal notification updating the extended deadline will be issued shortly. While the decision has been announced through a press release, taxpayers are advised to regularly check the official income tax website for updates.
Scope of the Extension
This extension specifically applies to tax audit reports for FY 2024-25 and related audit filings under Section 139. It does not impact the ITR filing deadline, which remains July 31, 2025.
The extension provides additional time for businesses and professionals to complete compliance requirements, particularly for complex audits that require meticulous verification of accounts.
Public Response
Search trends on Google indicate a rising interest in tax audit submissions as the extended deadline approaches. Business owners and professionals are proactively using the extra time to ensure accurate filings and avoid penalties.
