Chandrakant Patel and four US law enforcement officials accused of fabricating crime reports to aid immigrants’ U visa applications
New York (Economy India): In a case that has raised serious questions about abuse of the US immigration system, an Indian-origin businessman and four US law enforcement officials have been indicted on charges of visa fraud in Louisiana.
Chandrakant Patel, a resident of Oakdale, Louisiana, allegedly colluded with police officials Chad Doyle, Glynn Dixon, Tebo Onishea, and city marshal Michael Slaney to submit fake crime reports. These reports were then used to support applications for the U visa — a special category intended to protect victims of certain crimes who assist US authorities in investigations.
The indictment, issued by a federal grand jury in Lafayette on Wednesday, accuses the group of conspiring to defraud the US government by creating non-existent incidents to manipulate the system.
The U visa program, enacted in 2000, was designed to encourage undocumented immigrants to report crimes without fear of deportation. However, in recent years, concerns have emerged about its misuse through fraudulent claims.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how many visa applications were impacted by the alleged scheme or whether any financial transactions were involved. All five defendants are expected to appear before a federal judge later this month.
If convicted, the accused could face significant prison time and financial penalties under US federal law.
