RAIPUR (Economy India): sudden hike of ₹50 in cement prices across Chhattisgarh has caused alarm in the construction sector. This price increase is expected to significantly impact various government schemes and projects, including roads, buildings, bridges, canals, schools, colleges, anganwadi centers, and housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
Impact on Government Projects
The recent surge in cement prices is likely to escalate the costs of ongoing government and public welfare projects across the state. Chhattisgarh’s monthly cement production capacity is approximately 3 million tons, equivalent to around 60 million bags. Before September 3rd, the price of cement was around ₹260 per bag, which has now risen to ₹310 per bag.
Accusations Against Cement Companies
Despite Chhattisgarh being rich in mineral, iron, coal, and energy resources, cement companies have allegedly formed a cartel to inflate prices. A local leader has expressed concern over this and sent letters to the Chief Minister, Union Minister, and the Competition Commission of India, demanding a rollback. “The behavior of cement companies is akin to exploiting the people of Chhattisgarh and establishing a monopoly,” the leader stated in his letter.
Risk of Delays in Projects
The price hike is expected to directly affect infrastructure projects in the state. Particularly, the rising costs could delay the construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, potentially postponing the completion of these vital projects.
Demand for Action
State leaders have urged the government to take strict action against the cement factories and roll back the price increase to provide relief to the public. “The increased cement prices will not only raise project costs but also hinder the state’s development,” one leader emphasized.
The unexpected hike in cement prices in Chhattisgarh has raised concerns about the rising costs of government projects and public welfare initiatives. It remains to be seen how the government will address this issue and manage to control the prices to mitigate the impact on the public and ongoing development projects.
