Gold Prices Slide Over 1% as Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Concerns Weigh on Market Sentiment

New Delhi (Economy India): Gold futures extended their losing streak for the seventh consecutive session on Wednesday, with prices falling by up to Rs 1,753 per 10 grams amid renewed concerns over rising oil prices, inflation and interest rates following fresh military clashes between the United States and Iran.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for October delivery declined by Rs 1,559, or 1.03 per cent, to close at Rs 1,50,170 per 10 grams. The contract had ended at Rs 1,51,729 per 10 grams in the previous session.

The December gold contract also witnessed significant selling pressure, falling Rs 1,753, or 1.14 per cent, to settle at Rs 1,51,540 per 10 grams, compared with its previous close of Rs 1,53,293.

Seven-Day Losing Streak Continues

The latest decline marks the seventh consecutive trading session in which gold futures have fallen.

Market participants have been closely monitoring developments in global commodity markets, particularly crude oil, as renewed geopolitical tensions have raised concerns about supply disruptions and higher energy prices.

Higher oil prices can add to inflationary pressures globally, potentially influencing the monetary-policy decisions of major central banks.

US-Iran Military Tensions Impact Markets

According to market analysts, renewed military confrontations between the United States and Iran have heightened concerns about a wider regional conflict.

The developments followed recent US air strikes on Iranian military targets. Tehran subsequently targeted US military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq, according to the market assessment cited by analysts.

The escalation has increased uncertainty across global financial and commodity markets.

While geopolitical tensions can traditionally support demand for gold as a safe-haven asset, the latest market movement has been influenced by concerns over oil prices, inflation and interest rates.

Rising Oil Prices Add to Inflation Concerns

Crude oil prices have gained amid fears that an escalation in tensions could disrupt energy supplies and important transportation routes.

Higher energy prices can increase costs for businesses and consumers, potentially pushing inflation higher.

For investors, this raises questions about the future path of interest rates. Higher interest rates can make non-yielding assets such as gold relatively less attractive compared with interest-bearing investments.

Global Gold Prices Also Decline

Gold prices also remained under pressure in international markets.

In New York, COMEX gold futures for December delivery declined for the fourth consecutive session.

The contract fell by $46.46, or 1.06 per cent, to $4,349.94 per ounce.

The decline in international gold prices contributed to the weakness seen in domestic gold futures.

Interest Rate Expectations Remain Important

Gold markets are highly sensitive to expectations surrounding interest rates and monetary policy.

When investors anticipate higher interest rates, the opportunity cost of holding gold tends to increase because gold does not generate regular interest income.

Conversely, expectations of lower interest rates can support gold demand.

With renewed geopolitical tensions pushing up energy-price concerns, investors are assessing how central banks may respond if inflationary pressures become more persistent.

Safe-Haven Demand Faces Competing Factors

Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset during periods of geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

However, gold prices can be influenced by several factors simultaneously, including the US dollar, bond yields, interest-rate expectations, crude oil prices, central-bank policies and investor positioning.

In the current environment, concerns over inflation and interest rates appear to be offsetting some of the support that gold could otherwise receive from geopolitical uncertainty.

Gold DecemberRs 1,53,293/10gRs 1,51,540/10g-Rs 1,753

The figures highlight the continued selling pressure across near-term gold futures contracts.

What Investors Are Watching

Market participants are likely to keep a close watch on several developments in the coming sessions:

  • Further developments in the US-Iran conflict
  • Movement in crude oil prices
  • Inflation trends in major economies
  • US dollar movements
  • Global interest-rate expectations
  • Central-bank policy decisions
  • International gold demand
  • Investor positioning in precious metals

Any significant change in these factors could influence gold prices in both international and domestic markets.
