Jakarta (Economy India): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, visited the iconic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, underscoring the deep cultural and civilizational ties between India and Indonesia.

The visit came a day after the two countries exchanged a Letter of Intent (LoI) to begin a joint conservation and restoration project for the UNESCO World Heritage Site with assistance from India.

Visit Highlights Shared Heritage

The Prambanan Temple complex, one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia, stands as a symbol of the centuries-old cultural links between India and Indonesia. During their visit, the two leaders toured the historic monument and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving shared cultural heritage.

The restoration initiative is expected to strengthen cooperation in heritage conservation while promoting cultural diplomacy between the two nations.

India to Support Temple Conservation

India and Indonesia have agreed to collaborate on the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple complex. Under the Letter of Intent exchanged earlier this week, India will provide technical expertise and assistance for the preservation of the centuries-old monument.

The initiative reflects India’s growing role in supporting the restoration of globally significant cultural and historical sites.

Modi’s Three-Nation Tour

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Jakarta on Monday as part of a three-nation tour that includes Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand.

The visit aims to deepen strategic, economic, and cultural engagement with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region through high-level meetings and bilateral agreements.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The temple visit highlights the expanding partnership between India and Indonesia across multiple sectors, including:

  • Cultural heritage conservation
  • Strategic cooperation
  • Trade and investment
  • Tourism
  • People-to-people exchanges

Officials said the restoration project is expected to further reinforce the longstanding friendship between the two countries while preserving one of Southeast Asia’s most significant Hindu monuments for future generations.

Looking Ahead

The conservation of the Prambanan Temple is expected to become a landmark project in India-Indonesia cultural cooperation. As both countries continue to deepen their strategic partnership, initiatives centered on heritage preservation are likely to play an increasingly important role in strengthening bilateral ties.
